ON ARRIVAL at the swanky new Southern Sun Hyde Park hotel, YFM’s afternoon drive DJ and now television presenter, Dineo is in Twitter frenzy.
Springboks are checking into the hotel and Dineo, known for her love of tweeting and hot men, is in her element. Not that, as female, one can’t get excited when the likes of Schalk Burger and Victor Matfield are casually I wondering around the hotel.
Mo Flava arrives a tad later, but this self-confessed soul head and YFM breakfast drive DJ is rather nonchalant about these big men. The conversation moves on to the brand-new music show on e.tv called Club 808, which will be hosted by these two popular YFM DJs.
Having started last Friday at 7.30 pm, the show is executive produced by Zam Nkosi through the production house Red Pepper. Said Nkosi: “It is fun, flirty and slightly irreverent.” Club 808 will concentrate on international and local music news and entertainment. What will be interesting to sees whether there is chemistry between the two DJs who both have very strong yet different personalities.
While Dineo is wild and spontaneous, Mo Flava is more circumspect, with a somewhat vicious side. Throughout the interview it is clear that Dineo and Mo are comfortable with each other and keep each other in check, agreeing on most issues and also giving each other space to express their views. But it is during the photoshoot that the fun side of their relationship soon emerges.
They are supplied with exotic cocktails courtesy of Southern Sun and as a photographer Antoine de Ras clicks away,, the two feed off each other’s chemistry. Dineo playfully leans on Mo and sucks on cherry, while he enjoys the attention and smiles sweetly into the lens. Then she jumps on his back and he catches her, laughing all the while.
The pool deck, with Jozi as a backdrop, is the perfect place for the photoshoot. The two of them are teetering on the brink of national television stardom and they’re on top of the world. “There are going to be significant changes in our careers”, says Mo. “It’s going to blow up because it’s such intense exposure.”
“Our fan base will definitely grow and they will want to interact more personally with us because they can see our faces now,” continues Dineo. Radio is that much harder and a bit impersonal because it’s just your voice. Radio is theatre of mind.
The 26 year old was trained by Barney Simon before beginning at 5FM and then moving to YFM. She has had previous experience in television, from being an extra on Generations to bit parts in Yizo Yizo and Gaz’Lami, to guest presenting on The Real Goboza.
Mo Flava, on the other hand, studied radio at Boston College and is also known as a hot club DJ who, on weekends, plays to between 500 and 5000 people. Outside of YFM, Dineo specializes in MCing. Both agree that it is exciting to watch their respective careers unfold, the highlight of which is presenting on Club 808.
They also agree that they prefer working for e.tv (which is the sister company to YFM) over SABC. Says Dineo: “e.tv is a cool platform because it’s so diverse and pretty schizophrenic. They are the face of how diverse our society is.” The channel says: ‘keep pushing boundaries and we will support you’, agrees Mo. In keeping with that, Club 808 is aiming at a crossover audience. In their first show last week they featured Locnville and Kwesta.
However, for tomorrow night the two react as if their content is part of the Official Secret Act. Finally, after much darting of eyes back and forth, Dineo pipes up: “Remember Kentphonik?” Mo finishes the question for her: “Will they re-unite?”
Atta peeps. Really, since when was it a bad idea to advertise the content of a television shows?
