Desmond Msimango, the travel and tourism training adviser at Boston City Campus and Business College, reckons that his hunger for knowledge has landed him the position he holds today.
The Germiston central resident said; I never relied on a teacher to get me going and did my own research on the internet after hours. I realized that there’s a big gap between learning at school and what is expected of you at college and I don’t believe that students should only rely on what is taught in a class.
“Additional knowledge is freely available through libraries and the internet.” Msimango’s hours spent on the internet eventually proved fruitful; because he found the career he was looking for and enrolled at Boston for the travel and tourism operations qualification.
The subject appealed to him, especially tourism geography, overview of South Africa and other foreign countries, fares and ticketing, customer service and business English. But his early years were not easy.
His background was poor. With three other siblings and an absent father, his mother, who is the teacher, battled to put food on the table, let alone educate her own children. Many were the times when she had to rely on loans to pay the schools fees.
Despite her busy days in the classroom and all the domestic chores she had to do once she got home, she always finds the time to spend with Msimango, teaching him the importance of research. As an exercise she would make him come up with ideas for interesting essay topics for her pupils, which he would have to look for on the internet.
As a student adviser, he makes sure that his students are up to date with their work. Not all students learn at the same rate, so he identifies those that are struggling and helps them along.
When students are completing their assignments, he encourages them to use internet as a research tool. I want them to get excited about the tourism industry so that, ultimately, they will become productive to those companies that will be employing them,” he said.
